Stacked Fins Heat Sink

The stack fin heat sinks are composed of fins that interlock together to form a stacked fin array. This heat sink manufacturing method allows engineers to design heat sinks with very high aspect ratios hence providing high performing heat sink solutions.

Stacked fin heat sink can also serves as an alternative to the folded fin heat sink. With the thermal performance being equal to or better than the folded fin heat sink, stacked fins heat sink also offers several advantages over the folded fins heat sink.

Heat Sink And Thermal Design

While the folded fin heat sinks have good aspect ratio, the stacked fins heat sink fin can be manufactured with higher aspect ratios. This is achieved using conformed metal sheets stacked together in a direction to produce the stacked fins array. This stacked fins array creates a huge amount of surface area to dissipate the heat while maintaining good airflow through the heat sink.

Stacked fins heat sink also conveys the benefit of reducing the cost and lead-time. Compare to folded fin heat sinks, stacked fins heat sink has lower tooling cost and are faster fabricated and assembled. This makes the stacked fins heat sink an attractive alternative to folded fin heat sink particularly in smaller lot size manufacturing when cost and lead time are the two major constraints.

Heat Pipe HeatsinkLike the folded fin heat sinks, stacked fins heat sink has the ability to combine aluminum and copper to tailor the performance of the heat sink to the particular application. If the heat must be spread over a large heat sink base, copper can be used for its high conductivity, yet the heat sink fins can be produced from aluminum, reducing the weight and cost of the overall heat sink solution. On the other hand, copper heat sink fins may be advantageous due to its higher fin efficiency, and aluminum may be used in the heat sink base.

Finally, stacked fin heat sink manufacturing method allows engineers do design more complex heat sinks versus folded fin heat sinks. For example the stacked fin heat sinks can be designed and manufactured with integrated heat pipes while integrating heat pipes into folded fin heat sinks is not practical and cost effective.
