Email Folded Fin Heat SinksFolded fin heat sinks offer several advantages over other traditional methods of heat sink manufacturing. One distinct advantage is that heat sink fin thickness and fin pitch can be made thinner than by extrusion or cold forging heat sink manufacturing methods. Particularly useful in thin cross sections, where heat sink fin thickness is less important for thermal performance, folded fin heat sinks can be used to create a large amount of surface area, while still allowing good airflow passage through the heat sink.Enertron Folded Fins
Folded fin heat sinks are produced by a progressive stamping method, and then bonded to the heat sink base. For many applications, a folded fin heat sink may be the most economical method of fabricating the heat sink. A third advantage of folded fin heat sinks is the ability to combine aluminum and copper to tailor the performance of the heat sink to the particular application. If the heat must be spread over a large heat sink base, copper can be used for its high conductivity, yet the heat sink fins can be produced from aluminum, due to its low weight and cost. On the other hand, copper heat sink fins may be advantageous due to its higher fin efficiency, and aluminum may be used in the heat sink base.
Enertron uses three methods for bonding the folded heat sink fin to the base of heat sink: adhesive bonding, epoxy bonding, and soldering. For more information about these three heat sink bonding processes refer to Study of Thermal Characteristics on Solder and Adhesive Bonded Folded Fin Heat Sink. Enertron manufactures folded fin heat sink solutions of both Enertron heat sink designs, and the heat sink designs of our customers.
