1U Server Heat Sinks
1U Servers pose an interesting challenge for thermal engineers and heat sink designers. They have limited height, both restricting the size of the heat sink, and the size of the fans that provide forced convection for efficient heat sink and component cooling. Furthermore, many 1U servers feature multiple processors, as well as power supplies and other heat generating components. To dissipate the heat, most 1U servers use a series of 40mm x 40mm fans to provide forced air to the heat sink to carry the heat. However, the current 1U servers offer the highest performing CPUs, such as the AMD Opteron and Athlon 64, or the Intel Xeon or Pentium 4 adding up to the challenge of the heat sink design.

Enertron manufactures several standard 1U server heat sinks. Enertron offers the Polar Bear line of 1U server heat sinks. The PB heat sink line offers built in, dual intake blowers which force the airflow through a high density heat sink fin array. These 1U heat sinks feature copper base and copper fins. The 1U heat sinks are currently offered for both the AMD Opteron™ and Athlon™ 64 CPUs, and for Intel's Xeon™ and Pentium™ 4 CPUs. |

Enertron also offers an all-copper, high fin density 1U heat sink, to be used with ducted system airflow. This 1U heat sink is designed for the Pentium™ 4, and uses standard mounting clips. |

Lastly, Enertron offers customized 1U heat sinks to solve problems where the standard solutions and heat sinks do not work. When appropriate, Enertron integrates heat pipes into heat sink design offering a higher degree of flexibility to the thermal designer. Heat pipes enable the designer to bring heat from the CPU to an open area of the system where more space is provided for heat sink, improve the heat spreading across a heat sink base or increase the heat sink fin efficiency. |
